Two arrested after near head-on crash

COOKEVILLEa S- Aa Sman was arrested and charged with a second DUI offense after reportedly almost hitting a trooper head-on while driving this past Saturday. According to a warrant from Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Robertson, Christopher C. Roberts of Oakdale Circle, Cookeville, was stopped on Kenway Street for traveling left of the center line on Shipley Road and "almost hitting the trooper head-on" with his vehicle.

COOKEVILLEa S- Two women were recently caught shoplifting $1,500 worth of clothing and household items at a Cookeville department store late last week, resulting in felony charges. According to Officer Ethan Ross' report, loss prevention personnel at Walmart contacted Cookeville police after stopping two women, Brittany D. Parrish of Apple Street, and Tradonna S. Horn of Sewell Street, both in Baxter, at the store Thursday afternoon.

Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce sponsored a contest to select this year's Christmas parade theme, and the response was tremendous. After receiving dozens of entries, the parade committee chose the winning theme: "Reflections of Christmas," submitted by local resident Gaye Hill.

A 19-year-old Cookeville man has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping after an incident that began at Algood WalMart on Saturday night. Herman Patrick McCurdy, a resident of 3564 Pinewood Dr. in Cookeville, is being held today at the Putnam County Justice Center on a total of $45,000 bond for the charges, and law enforcement officers from several departments, including the Algood Police Department, Cookeville Police Department, and Putnam County Sheriff's Department were responsible for his apprehension and arrest.

A Crossville man has been indicted on several criminal charges for crashing the SUV he was driving into Cookeville Walmart last year and injuring three employees who were on their break. Brian William Peck has been indicted by the Putnam County grand jury on charges that include vehicular assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a firearm and DUI.

Two Cookeville men, in unrelated cases, have been indicted by the Putnam County Grand Jury with sex crimes involving minors. Robert Jay Joerger, 60, has been charged with eight counts of rape and three counts of aggravated statutory rape in incidents that allegedly happened between last November and this November and involve two teenage boys.

An Algood man arrested in October after allegedly shouting profanities in front of a school has now been indicted on four charges, even though one charge was dismissed in general sessions court early last month. Corey Mullins, 42, was indicted Monday on two charges of violation of sex offender registry, possession of a schedule IV drug for sell/delivery in a drug free zone and resisting arrest.

Two men are in jail for aggravated burglary after an anonymous tip led law enforcement officials to a Cookeville hotel room that contained various stolen items. Anthony Tate Miller, 20, of Crawford, and Dustin Puckett, 19, of Monterey, are each being held in the Putnam County Jail, and each is charged with one count of aggravated burglary and theft of property.

A registered sex offender from Buffalo Valley is behind bars after a reported domestic assault on Thursday put him in violation of his supervision conditions. Billy J. Nix, 40, has been charged with three counts of violations of community supervision because, according to arrest warrants, he was "behaving in an assaultive, abusive, threatening or intimidating manner."

Former Putnam County Property Assessor Travis Roberts has pleaded guilty to possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia, theft and official misconduct. Those charges against Roberts originated in incidents that happened earlier this year while he still held the office for which he was elected.

A Baxter man was arrested for driving under the influence, evading arrest, reckless endangerment and several other charges after leading Putnam Sheriff's deputies on a high speed chase early Monday morning. Mark Terry Martin, 53, was arrested when deputies caught up to him after he wrecked the "black limousine-type car" he was driving on Burgess Falls Road.

A woman who works as a guidance counselor for the Putnam County School System has been arrested twice within three days on alcohol-related charges, and one of those incidents involved a traffic accident with injuries. Susannah Akers was charged with DUI and violation of implied consent after the car she was driving hit another vehicle on Tuesday morning, Dec. 23, causing non-critical injuries to a mother and her 3-year-old child in that other vehicle.

A Baxter woman is behind bars after allegedly selling two vehicles for scrap that rightfully belonged to the estate of a deceased relative. Ellinda Tucker Fox, 34, of Baxter, is charged with theft and being held at the Putnam County Jail on $15,000 bond.
